What Happened?

As happens most days, I put my iPod on random-everything and a remix of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" came on. What happened to Michael?... I follow the news, I've seen most everything that's happened over the last 20 or so years, but when I get momentary flashbacks to my 8-year old to the "Thriller" album, I get an severe headache and return an error message of "cannot compute!" How did his whole life & persona go horrribly wrong?
